Teaching Ideas:
As with all poetry collections, teachers are advised to read the poems beforehand with their students in mind. (When you do, be sure to check out the subtle differences between the first and last poems.) Lots of links to geography and history are possible with the book; students may also be interested in finding out more about some of the cultures represented. Excerpts could belong in text sets about Greece, Native Americans, or the Middle East. The poems will be wonderful for reflection, especially in writing.
