Summary: |
This lively, clear, prose retelling of
Shakespeare's play Romeo and Juliet follows the original story very closely. |
Teaching Ideas: |
On several occasions, the author quotes a line from the original play. Teachers can share the longer passage which the contains the lines for a comparison of drama and prose. The musical West Side Story provides a contemporary version of the story for readers to compare. Undoubtedly, modern readers will want to discuss/write about the problems of young love in any age--love vs. infatuation, the pressure of parents, well-meaning people who intervene, the social mores of the community and so forth. Since the complex story contains much information, teachers might use summarizing or main idea + supporting detail strategies. More information about the historical conflict between the Guelphs and the Ghibellines mentioned in the author's note can be researched online. |
