Summary: |
The Persephone myth explains the seasons. The daughter is kidnapped by the ruler of the underworld, Pluto, who makes her his queen. But Persephone's mother, Demeter, grieving, refuses to let Spring return until she is again with her daughter. In the end Persephone decides to spend half of the year with each of them. |
Teaching Ideas: |
Teachers will need to introduce this book with care, placing the story within the genre of Greek mythology. It could be part of a multi-cultural unit on creation/nature myths or a unit that investigates what human questions myths attempt to answer. It may be fun to compare this myth with the mother/daughter book Indigo and Moonlight Gold.
