Summary: |
By following a dozen German youth, the author examines the attraction and occasionally the resistance of the role of the Hitler youth movement in Nazi Germany. The author includes additional material for further exploration. |
Teaching Ideas: |
Students might take a particular character to "inhabit" while reading the book and the epilogue and then write about the motivations and later life evaluation of the war years.
In social studies, the timeline and charting the places involved, including the nations during the war, would add to this reading. Students could also compare the different governments and rights of the citizens. Create a timeline of Hitler's rise to power. Have students discuss and write about how people can be led by charismatic leaders. Contrast the young people in this book to those in We've Got a Job. |
