Summary: |
When John Muir invited President Theodore Roosevelt to a visit of Yosemite, the two men sneak off from media and Secret Service to go on a 4-day camping trip. The Author's Note and biographies, convey the importance of the friendship in expanding the National Parks system. |
Teaching Ideas: |
Compare the levels of security surrounding Theodore Roosevelt and the current president.
Research Yosemite and some of its wonders.
Journal the trip as TR might have. Pair with another book about Teddy Roosevelt and his love of the outdoors and the same for John Muir. PBS did a fantastic series on the development of the national park system and all the impediments (the one about Muir and Yosemite would be great to show). A character sketch of Teddy Roosevelt would be fun. Students could even create a short Readers' Theater piece with Muir and Roosevelt. Lots of things to research from sequoia trees to maps and photos of Yosemite. What is the status of national parks today?
A support trade book for many content topics. Very indepth historical author's notes. Would be a great companion book to Barbara Kerley's "What to do about Alice". Like father, like daughter. |
