Summary:
A teenage girl, Fabiola, is separated from her mother emigrating from Haiti to the US. She lives with her aunt and three cousins in Detroit, Michigan while her mother is detained in New Jersey. Fabiola navigates her new home, family, school, with the tools available to her: her cousins flawed and aggressive world view, her aunts criminal and withdrawn presence, her devotion to her mother and her religion. etc. This story shows how fraught daily life can be in the marginalized communities of the US. How murky good and evil, right or wrong, can be in a world filled with disadvantage, poverty, and violence.

Teaching Ideas:
A nonjudgmental moderator would be essential for classroom discussion. Characters engage in criminal activity not explicitly portrayed as "bad."
