Integrating Computer Technology into the Classroom Final Activity

 

Title:                       Setting Up Your Free Yahoo E-mail Account

Learner Level:       ABE - Intermediate

Pre-Instruction:  

Discussion: In the last few lessons we learned internet basics including words/terms they need to know about the internet, how to enter an address, scroll up/down a web page, practiced navigating a webpage & website, explored the Yahoo home page. We also walked through the process of searching for images to copy and paste into documents already created. Last session ended with a brief discussion of what email is, and definitions of “Yahoo ID” and “Password” and other email terms they need to know. Part of the homework assignment was to write down 2 ID’s and a password for the next lesson.                 

Duration:               2-3 sessions (approx. 4-6 hours)

 

Materials:     

Notebooks, pens/pencils, wireless laptops, newsprint pad (terminology and Yahoo address, and other useful info already written on pad), markers

Objectives:     

  1. Guide learners through the process of setting up a free email account

  2. Explore an educational website

Procedure:     

Session I

  1. Brief review of last session’s email discussion (use notes on newsprint and refer to learners hand-out of email terms given out last session). Learners are also made aware of possible obstacles they may face, such as needing to modify the ID they have chosen if it is already used by someone else and the time it takes for the whole process.

  2. Check that each learner has their “Yahoo ID” and “Password”.

  3. Learners turn on and log-in laptops, open Explorer, type in Yahoo address and select “Mail.”

  4. Learners are guided by tutor line by line through the steps of setting up their accounts. Make sure each learner                         accurately writes down the ID and password chosen in a secure place.

  5. If time permits, everyone is walked through the process of sending an email to the tutor.

  6. Collect email addresses from learners and will write /  respond to  learners after class when convenient.

Procedure:  

Session II

  1. Review of last session

  2. Learners will check their email, retrieve email from tutor and print it out.

  3. Learners will follow tutor’s directions on the email and explore a particular

  4. [Email - Learners will be instructed to log on to website www.cdlponline.org . Each group member will be assigned a different subject heading to find on the home page. Each will click on the heading and print the story list for that subject. Learners will be instructed inform the tutor by email that they were able to print the list.]

  5. Group members will share their story lists and decide on the ones they would like to explore.

  6. Learners will exchange email addresses, and email at least one other learner and the tutor.

Evaluation:     Objectives have been met when learners accomplish the following:

·        Successful set-up of email account

·        Successful opening, retrieval, and sending of email to tutor and group members with little or and eventually no assistance

·        Completion of email assignment

                          

                           Learners will further be able to evaluate themselves as they

                           successfully navigate the stories on the website and complete

                           the various exercises.
