Title: Slavery in the United States
Learner Level:  Beginning/Intermediate Adult Basic Education/literacy students

 

Pre-Instruction:         

Civil War, economics of slavery would have been discussed in prior class. Class would have read The Freedom Side or Last Chance for Freedom. Internet, CD-ROM and Civil War specific vocabulary would have been introduced to the class.

Paragraph writing has been introduced and practiced.

                          

Duration:          

CD-ROM’s-1 hour for discovery time, 1 hour for information gathering,

Internet -1 hour for discovery time, 2 hours for information gathering,

Writing and Creating - 4 to 6 hours or more (includes peer review and editing)

 

Materials:      Software:  Apple Pie Music CD-ROM, Print Shop Deluxe, MSWorks, Powerpoint, Clip Art CD;

                        Books:      The Freedom Side and Last Chance for Freedom

Objectives:    

Students will discover what the daily life of slaves was like in pre-Civil War America, what part music played in their lives and in their escape plans, the extent of the Underground Railroad and the women who fought for freedom.

Students will learn how to navigate a web site working in groups of two and will practice taking notes on important information. Students will learn how to use the Apple Pie CD. Students will learn how to search for graphics in Print Shop and in the Clip Art CD and how to copy them into MSWorks. Students will also work in improving their skills with MS Works by formatting their paragraph according to instructor specifications.

 

Procedure:     

  1. Use the Apple Pie Music CD in groups of 2 to discover the music of the Civil War and slavery, the melodies, lyrics and background information on slavery.

  2. Choose a project to complete. The text of this project will be created in Word and then transferred to a  Powerpoint presentation.

                        a. Write a one page slave journal about your daily life as a field slave

                        b. Write a biography of Sojourner Truth or Harriet Tubman  

                        c. Write about the music of slavery and how it was used for communication.

 

    3. Everyone will create a map of the Underground Railroad in small groups.

 

(Volunteer tutors will be available to work with students in small groups and on the Internet.)
