Integrating Computer Technology into the Classroom

 

Title:                     Your Local Government Officials

 

Learner Level:     Low Intermediate ESL Adults

 

Pre-Instruction:   Citizenship Preparation Curriculum, The Constitution, Branches of Government

                          

Duration:              One week (classes meet twice per week for one and a half hours)   

  

Materials: 

Lynne Weintraub's Citizenship-Passing the Test Curriculum, computer with internet access, U.S., State and County maps

Objectives:         

  • To make students aware of their local government representatives

  • How to access information about local government

  • How to contact their local government officials.

Procedure:          

1.  Students will be given maps of U.S., state and county.  They will locate where they live on each map.

2.  Explanations of the jurisdiction of each area will be given.

3.  Students will be directed to the Arkansas.gov website to determine the name, and term of each of their State and U.S. Senators and Representatives.

4.  Students will complete a Cloze activity in Word to practice the length of terms and the names of government representatives.

 

Evaluation:          

Students will be given practice Citizenship tests to determine their knowledge and skill level around Local, State and U.S. Government.
