Integrating Computer Technology into the Classroom - Final Activity

 

Title:                   Learning About Jobs and Earnings

 

Learner Level:   Pre-GED and GED

 

Pre-Instruction: 

The Instructor will prepare students by navigating through different web pages in the internet, newspapers job opportunity listings, and look for current events/economic issues to gather information on what people are currently earning at various positions, i.e. government, community based organizations and other private and public sectors. The Instructor will prepare a step-by -step process for students to follow.

                          

Duration:           approximately 180 minutes 

 

Materials:

 

q       Computer access to internet and web-based learning program, and a floppy disk;

q       Provide a chart in the floppy disk for students to fill out with jobs (at least 5) they find interesting in terms of availability, location of job, qualifications needed, and salary.  Students will look for similar jobs to the 5 chosen and compare qualifications and salaries.

q       Provide students with the current article, ‘What People Earn’ from www.whatpeopleearn.parade.com that includes websites with Bureau of Labor Statistics, occupational employment statistics to read and use as reference when looking for job opportunities.

 

Objectives:  

For students to learn how to search the internet for job opportunities and how to compare job qualifications and salaries at different sectors, different locations. Students will also learn how to hold a discussion on jobs that they feel deserve high salaries and jobs that they feel deserve low salaries.          

Procedure:

Students will log on to the Internet and search for at least five job opportunities similar positions in various web pages – www.bostonglobe.com; www.monster.com; www.gov.ma.us/jobs and any other web site of the student’s choice. Students will complete the chart provided on disk.  Students will log on to web-cast program and post findings under Discussion.  Students are to discuss each other’s findings and to answer these questions: 

 

  1. Were the jobs found and selected in local area? 

  2. Why do you think jobs were found at these locations? 

  3. If there are differences in qualifications and salaries, why do you think this is?    

 

Evaluation: 

Based on the results of the search of information and the assigned reading, the learners will demonstrate skills including accurately noting details, using vocabulary to compare and contrast jobs, and restating information found as part of their research while using their own words.  Written communication and critical thinking skills are based on how well students draw their conclusions through their postings on the discussion panel, and writing skills is demonstrated through expressing their thoughts in the web-based discussion using appropriate language for their learning level.
