Computer-based Lesson Plans -  Creating Job Presentations  by Elizabeth Westhead

Title:                  Creating Job Presentations

Learner Level:  Beginner ESL and computer skills

Pre-Instruction:

Students will learn about various occupations and practice describing job functions. Then, students will write a short self introduction and describe their jobs. It is highly recommended that students have previously undergone some instruction on basic mouse, keyboarding and word processing functions.

Duration:           2 hours (one class period)

Materials:

  • Computers with power point software and internet capability

  • computer projector

  • students’ self introductions and job descriptions

  • students’ job photographs (in digital form) and/or digital camera.

  • Sample power point presentation(s) in digital format and hard copies on paper.

  • Disks to save the presentations onto.

Objectives:

  • Students will learn work-related English, and basic functions of Microsoft Power Point.

  • Students will practice keyboarding and mouse skills.

  • Students will practice writing English (on the computer) and speaking English (while giving their presentations).

Procedure:

    1. The teacher gives a sample power point presentation to the class using the computer projector and hands each student a hard copy of the presentation.

    2. The students organize their previously written introduction/ job description into power point format on paper (*it is possible to leave room next to each slide on the sample presentation print-out where the students can write in their own information.)

    3. The teacher gives a demonstration using the projector about how to start a power point presentation and how to enter the information on the slides. The students take notes (the teacher or one of the students can write out the instructions on the board or on a large piece of paper for the others to copy, if necessary).

    4. The students go to the computers, open power point and begin entering their information and creating their presentations. The teacher monitors and helps students and reminds them to save their work onto their disks.

    5. When the students are finished entering their text, the teacher will show them individually how to insert their digital photos (because this will vary depending on whether the student has the photos on a camera, disk or the internet). If students don’t have photos, the teacher and other students can help act out some job functions in the classroom and take pictures with the digital camera.

    6. When the students are finished, the teacher will review each presentation to make sure everything is included and working properly. Then, the teacher will open the students’ files on the computer connected to the projector and demonstrate how to play the slideshow so the students can practice giving their presentations.

    7. Each student will give his/ her presentation to the rest of the class.

Evaluation:

§         The teacher will observe the students creating their presentations on the computer and take notes on their progress in learning power point functions.

§         The teacher will observe and take notes on the spoken final presentations to assess the students’ progress in learning work-related English.

§         The students will complete a self-assessment checklist of which specific skills they feel they learned well, learned a little, or didn’t learn/don’t remember.
