Title:                   Setting Goals/Choosing a Career

 

Learner Level:   Adults:  all levels

 

Pre-Instruction:  Discuss how to personal goals for education and career.

                          

Duration:             6 hours

 

Materials: 

List of points to cover in the Goals/Career Choice essay; mapping handout for preparing an essay; list of slides for the PowerPoint presentation; instruction sheet for preparing a PowerPoint presentation; video projector; computers with Microsoft Office software.

Objectives: 

To develop students’ reasoning and research skills; to help students choose a career and develop a career plan; to teach students to use Internet for research; to teach students to use PowerPoint.

Procedure: 

Instruct students on mapping their essay.  Go over the points to cover in the essay.  Choose a career by directing them to www.bls.gov website and researching the Occupational Handbook at that site.  Internet search will also be conducted by the students.  Students will find interesting facts about their career choice, educational or job requirements, locations, and salary.  Instruct students on how to prepare a PowerPoint presentation. A presentation with information about himself and his career will be prepared by each student.

 

Evaluation:          Students will produce a minimum 1-page essay.  Students will give a PowerPoint presentation.
