Title: Vocabulary Building Learner Level: Beginning ESL Pre-Instruction: Using conventional classroom instruction identify and pre- teach relevant vocabulary Duration: 1 hr.
Materials: Picture Dictionary, Magazines, things brought from home ( children’s school work, bills etc.)
Objectives: Increase the student’s usable, daily vocabulary
Procedure: Identify new vocabulary by having the students point out in the materials which vocabulary they need to know. Use available resources (picture dictionary, foreign language dictionary, translator etc) to establish the meaning of the vocabulary. Use the “Puzzle Maker” website to create a puzzle. Use simple sentences building on already learned material to learn appropriate use of the vocabulary and reinforce spelling and grammar. Use the “ESL café” website as well as other websites and software (Cross Roads Café” to reinforce the usage of the vocabulary.
Evaluation: Have the activities followed up by a spelling exercise as well as a matching exercise. Matching Exercises are dependent on level of student understanding of the English Language. They can consist of matching a picture to a word, finding the word in a newspaper article to matching the new vocabulary to an actually written definition or application
