Title:  Planning a day trip to our state capital:  Raleigh, NC                    

Learner Level:  GED Prep: 9 – 12.9    

 

Pre-Instruction:  Lesson on Raleigh, the capital of North Carolina (may include history, geography, government, etc.)  

Duration:  Research:  2 hours     Writing:  2 hours         

Materials:  Computer with Internet and Microsoft Word; calculator

 

Objectives:        

1) To practice navigating the Internet

2) To research points of interest /attractions (i.e. museums, parks, events) in our     capital city

3) To practice map reading

4) To make a trip budget (time & money)

5) To practice using Microsoft Word

 

Procedure:          

 

1) Using the Internet, find three points of interest in Raleigh, NC

You might use one of the search engines (yahoo, google) or simply type in www.visitraleigh.com

 

2)      Choose one point of interest to research, and find the following:

  1. Distance in miles and hours from your home to this location.  Use www.mapquest.com and print a copy of the map and directions.

  2. Find the cost, if any, for admission.

  3. Find the hours of operation.

  4. Plan a budget for your trip, including number of people who will be going, gas, meals, and admission cost.

  5. Determine time of departure and arrival of return.

  

3)      Write a 1-page paper using Microsoft Word.  Include the above    information and explain how you plan to spend the day.  Attach a copy of your map.

Completed project evaluated by instructor.
