Title:                    Exploring the Seven Continents  

 

Learner Level:    Adults   

 

Pre-Instruction: 

A KWL worksheet for each continent will be use to gain interest and assess student knowledge. A fill in map will be used for students to establish the location of the seven continents. Definitions for continent, country, state, town, city, region, time zone, climate, population, and natural resources will be discussed. This unit will have little pre-instruction.  The idea is to have the students to research and create with the teacher acting as a facilitator.

Duration:             10 Days (1 1/2 hour class periods)   

 

Materials:

                 World Map, Globe, KWL Sheets, Scavenger Hunt, Computers, Printers, Website List, Student Generated 

                 Spreadsheet,  Quiz, Poster boards, Students Generated Graphs, Scissors, Color Pencils, Glue, Overhead

                 Projector, Computer - Projector set up

                

Objectives:

                  TSW explore the seven continents via internet.

                  TSW complete a mini scavenger hunt for each contintent. (latest population, natural resources, main crop,

                            size)

                  TSW enter information from scavenger hunt into a spreadsheet.

                  TSW create graphs to compare/contrast information.

                  TSW design a posterboard to display their work.

                  TSW create a quiz for each of the continents.

Procedure: 

                  TTW provide students with a world map and ask students to write in the names of the seven continents.

                  TTW observe to see if students know the names and locations of the seven continents.

                  TTW clarify any identify the seven continents for students to check their work using the overhead projector. 

                  TTW discuss important vocabulary and their meanings with students.

                  TTW provide students with a KWL chart for each continent.

                  TTW provide students with a scavenger hunt for each continent and a  list of websites to use for

                  finding information.

                  TTW will direct teach how to set up a spreadsheet and show examples using a computer - projector set up.

                  TTW will direct teach how to create graphs using the information from each scavenger hunt.  This will be  

                  taught using a computer - projector set up.

                  TTW provide students with guidelines for creating their poster boad and quiz.
