Title:                    Making Sense of Percents

Learner Level:     GED

 

Pre-Instruction:

Set-up technical equipment. Give students copy of ‘GED Connections Mathematics’ Vocabulary on Percents, workbook page 110 (instructor may choose to limit vocabulary to percents and other relevant terms)

                          

Duration:  

Can be divided into segments. Can be used as an extensive lesson or divided into 2 or 3 shorter lessons on the same subject.      

Materials:  

q       Pencils,  Paper,

 q       Computers (instructor and students), Internet connections

q       LCD projector,  Screen

q       GED Connections workbook and video ‘Mathematics’

 

Objectives:   To assist student in learning percents (beginning to intermediate GED levels)    

      

Procedure:

q       Class discussion of Percent Vocabulary

q       Class discussion of ‘Introduction to Percents’ worksheets from LINCS webpage

       www.nwlincs.org/NWLINCSWEB/EITCMath.htm to include instructor going over examples, work two or

       three problems, students finish problem set

q       Review ‘Introduction to Percents’ worksheets with students to check for understanding

q       Watch PowerPoint presentation of ‘Simple Percent Word Problems’ downloaded from LINCS webpage

q       Class discussion of ‘Simple Percent Word Problems’ worksheets from LINCS webpage to include instructor

      going over examples, work two or three problems, students finish problem set

q       Review ‘Simple Percent Word Problems’ worksheets with students to check for understanding

q       Discuss with class all worksheet examples and answer questions

q       Collect all worksheets, give students another copy of both worksheets, have students work on their own and

      complete worksheets again for reinforcement of learning

 

Extension of procedure:

q       GED Connections Math workbook: Program 32-Ratio, Proportion and Percent’

o       Workbook—Before You Watch

o       Video—GEDC Program 32 (Queue video to ‘Working with Percent’, if appropriate)

o       Workbook—After You Watch

o       Internet Activity (students can be instructed to complete only ‘percent’ sections)

Evaluation:  

q       Collect and grade second set of LINCS worksheets

q       GED Connections online tests
