Title:                  Ten of the Hundred Selected Most Influential People of the Millennium

 

Learner Level:  Pre-GED-Mostly Level 3

 

Pre-Instruction:

Introduce the internet and search engines by demonstrating on the computer.  Provide each student with one question to use Google or Yahoo to research the answer

Duration:          Parts of 4 class periods

 

Materials:        Computer with internet, VCR and video, Power Point, paper, pencil

 

Objectives:

1)  Practice navigating the internet with the use of search engines.

2)  Incorporate the use of computer research in practicing ABE skills.

3)  Practice reading skills by using factual information, summarizing, picking out main      ideas, and drawing a conclusion.

4)  Practice language-writing skills by writing a biographical essay of the one researched.

5)  Practice math skills by drawing bar, line, and pie graphs.

6)  Practice, with assistance, using power point to produce a simple presentation,           summarizing information of the10 influential people

  

Procedure:

1)  Introduce the internet and use of search engines. 

2)  Use the internet to answer one question as a preliminary research.

3)  Research, by using the internet, each of the selected 10 people, to locate where and             when the person was born, and why he/she is famous.

4)  Select one of the ten most influential people to do more in-depth research using the   internet.

5) View a 10 minute video of the person selected.

Evaluation:

1)  Write an essay using GED guidelines.

2)  Draw a bar, line, and pie graph to represent the ages of the 10 selected people.

3)  As a group produce a power point presentation.
