Title:                      Literature/Social Studies: The Grapes of Wrath

Pre-Instruction:   

1. Background of the Dust Bowl – 1930’s

2. Worker’s rights

3. Immigrant workers               

                          

Duration:             1 week Adult Education        

Materials:   

1. Computer with word-processing program

2. Internet access

3. VHS player

4. Movie – The Grapes of Wrath

Objectives:         

1. Students will learn about a segment of our history – the Dust Bowl.

2. They can compare worker’s rights from the past with those of today.

3. They can gain insight into the motivations of immigrants.

4. They will watch the movie – The Grapes of Wrath             

Procedure:          

1. Students will go to www.pbs.org/wgbh/amex/dustbowl/timeline/

2. Students will then explore worker’s rights and plights by exploring http://eprentice.sdsu.edu/j03op/burgin/webquest.html

3. Students will watch the movie –The Grapes of Wrath and discuss how the workers and their families were portrayed.

 

Evaluation:          

After watching the movie, the students will write an essay (on the computer) comparing the migrant workers of the 30’s with the immigrant workers of today.
