Integrating Computer Technology into the classroom - Final Activity
Title: Getting to know each other
Learner level: Lower Intermediate ESL students
Pre-Instruction: 1. Comparative and superlative forms 2. Basic skills for using a computer (Completing CASAS Technology check list A)
Duration: 3 hours
Materials: · One computer connected to the internet for every student · Worksheet 1, 2, and 3
Objectives:
1. Low intermediate ESL learners working in small groups will be able to write a paragraph using the comparative and superlative to compare and contrast the different countries represented in the classroom with less than 2 errors 2. Low intermediate ESL learners working in pairs will ask and answer geographical information questions with 95% accuracy 3. Low Intermediate ESL learners will be able to navigate a Web site to discover information about the different countries represented in the classroom with 100% accuracy 4. Low intermediate ESL learners will get to know their classmates better and increase their knowledge of the cultures represented in the classroom
Procedures:
1. The teacher reviews the superlative and comparative forms of adjectives.
2. Students finish questions of the superlative and comparative forms through on line resource
3. Teacher and students discuss the United States and go over new vocabulary. Teacher poses questions to the class: · How big do you think the United States is? · What’s the population of the U.S.? · What are the major religions in the U.S.? · What’s the average life expectancy in the U.S.? · Etc.
4. Class and teacher then go to the www.geographic.org.
5. Teacher demonstrates how to navigate the site and gather the necessary geographical information to answer the questions on worksheet 2 (See Appendix 2)
6. Students work in pair to interview each other and fill in the information on worksheet 3 (See Appendix 3)
7. Students work together to write comparative and superlative sentences about countries in the class. (See Appendix 4)
8. Students present their sentences to the class
9. Class discusses what they have learned.
Evaluation:
Students will be evaluated based on
· response to worksheets · participation in group research · comparing and contrasting information · retelling information · interpreting information · formulating and asking questions.
