Computer-based Lesson - Create a Catalog of Collectibles and or things of interest by William Howard

Integrating Computer Technology into the Classroom Final Activity

Topic:                 Create a Catalog of Collectibles and or things of interest.

Learner Level:  Beginning ESL or intermediate etc.

Pre-Instruction:

We will cover the basics of excel and the user options as well as the input of columns and rows. We will go over formulas and field data input. Students will gather their items that they want to input, could be the recipes or a collection of items that they have, collection of spoons, shot glasses, etc…

Duration:  4 lessons will be needed in two hour durations

Materials:  A blank CDR disk, a handout on the key topics, a cheat sheet on excel operations, computers

Objectives:

The goal will be to implement the use of excel in the students daily life or work. The students will learn the basics of entering data and be able to apply this in almost every facet of their life. The students will become comfortable with the program and will find that they can think of many things to use it with.

Warm-up/Review:

A review of the previous day or the topic that we will cover will start before individual work begins. The students will have an opportunity to ask questions and fill in any blanks they may have in the intention of the assignment.

Introduction:

A demonstration of the computer tower and parts will commence where I will have the opportunity to point and name each device to gather a general understanding. Then the focus will shift to the programs on the desktop and the excel program itself.

Practice:

For the first day we will do a project together where participation is key and focus on the cheat sheets will be emphasized. This will allow the students to know what is expected of them and even what they need to do in the assignment. This again will make them comfortable enough to attempt this on their own the next day and allow me to explain on a one on one basis.

Performance:

The final output will be a presentation of their work and the topic that they chose. This will be presented to the class or scheduled individually for those that have serious inhibitions about presenting to the class.

Evaluation:

How well did the lesson work?  What do you need to cover again?  What would you change next time. Student input on each presentation.

Technologies Used:

  1. Desktop Computer

  2. Windows XP ( Operating System )

  3. Microsoft Excel

  4. Keyboarding Skills

  5. Saving to a disk
