Integrating Computer Technology into the Classroom

Title:                     ESL class: India, Pakistan Add to Peace Measures

Learner Level:     6-7

Pre-Instruction:

Individual use of a computer, accessibility to the Internet, Microsoft Word program and an Electronic Dictionary “Oxford Advanced Genie” is necessary for each student in a classroom.

Duration:             1, 5 hours

Materials:

An article from San Francisco Chronicle online “India, Pakistan Add to Peace Measures / Singh, Musharraf Meet in New Delhi”, Electronic Dictionary “Oxford advanced Genie” Objectives: English reading comprehension, reading-aloud, speaking, learning new words, using technology.

Procedure:

First students should open a New Document from Microsoft Word program and after that - Electronic Dictionary. Then after signing on the Internet students should type the web address www.google.com to open a Google Search Engine and then search for News and open “Top stories” site where an article “India, Pakistan add to Peace Measures” is located.

The teacher reads the whole first page to the class aloud and discusses the meaning with the students writing the unknown words on the board. Then one student reads the first paragraph aloud. After reading a single paragraph, each student works individually by looking up for the meaning of the unknown words in the Electronic Dictionary. Then they go to the opened Microsoft Word Document and type it in or copy it from the Internet page. Then they think of a new sentence using the new word in it and write it down next to the typed word. After all words from the paragraph are known and the new sentences are made with them, students read their sentences to the class out loud. Then another student reads the next paragraph. And so on till all the new words are known.

Evaluation:

A teacher evaluates student’s reading comprehension and Speaking-English ability by observing while discussing the story with students, asking questions about the content. The understanding of the meaning of the new words can be evaluated and corrected by the teacher when the students read their own made sentences. (For evaluating reading comprehension could be used teacher’s made checklist with questions based on the text and a few answers from which only one would be correct. The checklist could be e-mailed to each student for their homework and corrected during the next class.)
