Computer-based Lesson - Dinner and a Movie by Jim Lively

 

Title:                   Dinner and a Movie

Learner Level:   ELA – Level 3 and up; GED – Level ABE 3 and up  

 

Pre-Instruction:

Students will have received instruction in basic computer and Internet functions and will know how to create a Table in MSWord, as well as how to surf the web and perform specific searches.

                          

Duration: 2-4 hours preparation and assembly

 

Materials:

Each student will receive a proposed, imaginary budget of $200.00 and select a family member or friend for whom he/she would like to throw a celebration bash (birthday, new job, graduation, engagement, etc.)

 

Objectives:

(1) Each student will plan an imaginary celebration, including a complete meal (soup or salad, entrée, 2 vegetables, and desert,) to be followed by a movie. All purchasing selections will be accomplished using the Internet. No actual purchases will be made, nor money spent;

(2) Put into practice knowledge of computer basics and certain program applications;

(3) Create a menu for a meal;

(4) Work within an established budget;

(5) Perform a productive web search; (

6) Accumulate data;

(7) Make buying decisions.

                          

Procedure:

(1) Students will create a Table in MSWord with 25 rows and 6 columns. Column headings will be as follows - Vender & URL, Item, Cost (including shipping/delivery charges,) Delivery time, Movie, and Selection. 3 copies of the Table will be printed.

(2) Students will perform a web search sufficient to illustrate at least 3 alternative vendors for each single item on the menu.

(3) Data will be entered in the Table as per table headings.

(4) A decision will be made for each menu item and the movie, with a checkmark placed in the Selection column, signifying the vendor to be used.

(5) Students must determine how much time in advance such a celebration project must be ordered.

(6) The total cost of the project must not exceed $200.00.

 

Evaluation:

Each student will present his/her Dinner and a Movie idea, advance-time needed to do it, and completed Table to the class, plus give an oral report of the experience with the project.
