Integrating Computer Technology into the Classroom-Final Activity

 

Title:                           Creating an E-Resume and Posting it Online

 

Learner Level:           Adult

 

Pre-Instruction:          Students will have created a basic resume in Microsoft Word and saved it. Students will have also been taught basic Internet Explorer and Hotmail or Yahoo e-mail procedures and will create an e-mail account.

 

Duration:                    This lesson will take approximately four hours. Two hours to view video (stopping and starting to document important information). Two hours will be needed to create E-Resume.

 

Materials:                  Example electronic resumes, list of key terminology to use on resume, diskette or other saving device, computer, and websites.

 

Objectives:                 Students will be able to:

·        Create an electronic resume

·        Post resume on-line

·        Fill in the E-Form

·        Post a cover letter

·        E-mail resume

                                    Students will look at sample E-Resumes and compare it to their resume. Students will then watch the E-Resume video and take appropriate notes to be used to create their E-Resume. Students will then go to a computer and start the process. Handouts will be provided for each student (sample below).

 

E-RESUME

 

WHAT IS AN ELECTRONIC RESUME?

 

An Electronic Resume is a resume designed specifically to be used on and through a computer.

 

·        Read on a computer

·        Saved on a computers hard drive or disk

·        Sent over the Internet

·        Located by search engines

·        Searched for keywords

·        Converted to other electronic file types such a database files

·        It can be printed to paper

 

The Database-electronic file cabinets:

 

  1. Identify how a resume was received

  2. Assigned requisition numbers

  3. Search for keywords

  4. Rank resumes

  5. Generate reports

 

Keywords

 

Each database has a key search engine designed to look for keywords such as:

·        Technical experience

·        Management skills

·        Industry knowledge

·        Education and training

·        Geographic location

·        Employment history

 

Make a list of 20-60 terms that can be used as keywords throughout your resume. These terms can be technical and non-technical.

   Examples:

   MS Word                    Typing

   MS Excel                     Customer Service

   MS PowerPoint            Sales Representative

   Internet Trainings

 

List all the keywords as nouns and not as verbs.

 

POSTING YOUR RESUME ONLINE       

 

You can post your resume in a resume bank on the Internet. There are two types of job banks:

1.      individual website

2.      public resume bank

 

You can visit one of the following websites to post your resume:

www.monster.com

 

FILLING IN THE E-FORM

Required answers are usually marked by an *. Optional answers should be answered regardless of the question. Also, count your words. If it tells you only to key in a specific amount of characters; than do not go over that number. Use the Word Count feature. Go to the Tools menu and choose Word Count. Always make sure you know what job you are applying for. Know either the job number or job title.

 

HOW TO PREPARE YOUR RESUME FOR POSTING

 

Use the MS-Word

  1. Save the resume as text only

    1. Go to file

    2. Choose Save As

    3. Give document a new name such as: restextonly

    4. Choose text only as type

    5. Save

    6. Close Document

 

  1. Re-open document-Go to file and choose open and choose the restextonly document.

  2. Your name should be on 1 in ALL CAPS

  3. Contact information should be on separate lines

  4. Limit line lengths: Make all line lengths no more than 65 characters. Look for the line that is the longest then go to Tools and choose Word Count, and select char. with spaces. (for e-mail area only)

  5. add any keywords

  6. Delete references, page 2 if any

  7. Use ALL CAPS for words that need special emphasis. (use sparingly)

  8. Replace bullets with * or ** or – or +.

  9. Allow the lines to wrap naturally. Let the text be flush left.

  10. Re-arrange text.

  11. Copy and paste if needed.

 

POSTING A COVER LETTER

 

A cover letter is a personal intro to your resume and you should keep the following points in mind:

·        Keep it short

·        Don’t summarize

·        Show personality

·        MS Work, spell check

·        Convert to text only

·        Add keywords

·        Replace bullet points

 

E-MAILING YOUR RESUME

 

Go online and then access and log into your e-mail account.

 

In the subject/regarding area type in: Resume: (name of position)

 

Copy your cover letter and resume and then paste it into your e-mail text area. The whole document should be no more than three pages.

 

Press the send button.

 

Evaluation:                    Students will forward their e-mail to teacher and then print out a hard copy to turn in for final grade.
