Objectives:

Students will:

  • get to know classmates better, creating a learning community

  • practice oral English and do a self-assessment of skills

  • create a table

  • create a graph

  • present their findings to the class

  • display their graphs in the classroom, creating an artistic and scientific environment

Procedure:

Classroom day 1:

Students think of a question they would like to ask classmates; they write the question and possible responses; students circulate, ask their questions, and record the answers

Computer lab day 1:

Students use Microsoft Word to create a table and a pie chart to display the answers to their questions (see sample charts)

Computer lab day 2:

Students use Windows Media Player or a similar recording program to practice the English they will use to present their findings to the class; they use the assessment rubric to self-assess their English; they ask the Instructor and other students to listen to their recordings and assist with English questions they are not sure of

Classroom day 2:

Students in turn, present their findings to the class describing the charts and telling the class why they chose that particular question; the Instructor uses the same Rubric to measure English skills as students used in self-assessment; students hang their graphs on the walls of the classroom; the Instructor conferences with each student using their Rubrics as a departure for discussing progress and language learning goals

Evaluation:

Can students create a pie chart?
