Title:                          Planning and budgeting for a vacation

Learner Level:          ESOL IV

Pre-Instruction:         Instruction will explain the activities students will be expected to complete.   The class will discuss possible vacation spots, possible costs and modes of travel.

Duration:                   Three classes of 3 hours each (9 hours)

Materials:                  Brochures from Travel Agencies, information from banks regarding traveler’s checks and credit cards, computer and disks.

Objectives:                 To teach the students how to search the internet, budget using a spreadsheet, make reservations and give a presentation.

Procedure:                  Students will be told by the Instructor an amount that he or she will be allowed to use for their vacation. They will search the internet for vacation sites (Disney World, Disney Land, Sea World, Reno, Las Vegas, New York, Yellowstone National Park, Cruises, etc.).

Students will search for lodging rates of hotels and resorts.

Students will search bus, train and airline fares as well as Map Quest to obtain mileage in the event they will drive. If they choose to drive, they will calculate an estimated cost for gasoline and must be prepared for possible vehicle repairs.

When all information is gathered, they will develop a budget using an excel spreadsheet to determine the mode of travel, lodging and length of stay.

Their final activity will be to go on-line and make reservations but will not actually click submit.

Evaluation:                 Each student will present their budget and travel plans using Power Point. Their peers and the Instructor will evaluate the presentation on how well the vacation is planned and how well they budgeted for the vacation.
