Description This alternative delivery professional development opportunity is for all ABE teachers. The purpose of the Algebra 1 course is to support teachers' efforts to prepare their students to succeed in an Algebra 2 course.
Algebra 1 - Part 3 contains one DVD with five lessons. Disc 3 starts with 2 mathematical investigations with linear functions and geometry. However, the majority of the Disc 3 examines quadratic functions. Five mathematical explorations help participants gain an understanding of quadratic functions. Graphing quadratic functions is taught in a lesson on this disc. Finally, participants are taught the method of finite differences.
Each topic is covered in an easy to understand, 30 minute lesson. The lessons can be used in several ways. A teacher might decide to watch and complete the lessons independently, or a small group of instructors could discuss and watch the DVD together. The lessons could also be used with ABLE students to help them prepare for the higher level skills in the Advanced Stackable Certificate. No matter how the Algebra 1 program is used, your math knowledge will increase.
Please note: During the video, the instructor uses a graphing calculator. Participants do not need a graphing calculator to benefit from the lessons. However, if you would like to borrow one, please type "Calculator" in the "Special Needs" section of the registration form.
The activity involves the following steps:
1. Review the outlines for the five lessons.
2. Watch the video lessons.
3. Complete the activity worksheets for the lessons. Check the activity worksheets using the enclosed answer key.
4. Record the necessary information on the Algebra 1 Chart.
5. Reflect on the lessons. Record your impressions as both a teacher and a learner.
6. Return a copy of your Algebra 1 Chart and a signed stipend request/evaluation form ($30) and a certificate of completion will be sent to you.
