| Description This hands-on training is for ABLE Math teachers. It can be done individually or with a small group. Facilitator guidelines are included for planning group trainings. Teachers will learn to use a variety of manipulatives to improve their math instruction and increase the learning of their ABLE students. The kit contains enough manipulatives for either 5 or 10 students including square tiles, one-inch wooden cubes, number spinners, 10-sided dice, pattern blocks, number lines, and tape measures, just to mention a few. The kit also includes a Math Tool Kit notebook/CD of teaching ideas and three books. In the section marked Special Needs on the registration form, please indicate whether you are requesting materials for 5 students or 10 students. The activity involves the following steps: 1. Read the article A Framework for Adult Numeracy Students" and selections from Teaching Math to Adolescents and Adults included in the Math Tool Kit Notebook. 2. Review the "How Can I Use This Manipulative?" and the Quick Search that provide skills that can be taught using each manipulative. 3. After reading the materials, select manipulatives that would be useful in your classroom. Teach a lesson using each manipulative. Pick lesson topics you feel will benefit your students and reinforce the curriculum you are teaching. 4. Write a brief reflective paper on your experiences using the manipulatives. 5. Return the tool kit and the reflective paper with a signed stipend request/evaluation form ($30) and a certificate of completion will be sent to you. |
