Description
This alternative delivery professional development activity can be completed easily at home and in your classroom on your own schedule. It involves the following steps:
1. Read Creating Book Clubs in the English Language Classroom. "Although it is a natural way for students to improve their language skils, a classroom book club can also be challenging for teachers to facilitate". For this reason, Barbara Vaille and Jennifer QuinnWilliams have made their classroom-tested model and account of their experiences available for ESOL and GED teachers.
2. Write a proposal of how you would implement the authors' model in your classroom. Your proposal should indicate how you would adapt the techniques to your student population.
3. Request a class set of books from the Northeast ABLE Resource Center to begin your book club.
4. Facilitate the book club with your students.
5. Keep an on-going journal of the class's reactions to the book club experiences.
6. Write a summary of the activity from your class journal and submit it it the Northeast ABLE Resource Center. If you are requesting a stipend ($60), also include the completed stipend request form.
