Bridges Out of Poverty: Strategies for Professionals and Communities by Ruby K. Payne, Philip DeVol and Terie Dreussi Smith

"If you didn't grow up in poverty, you may be unaware of the hidden rules that govern many aspects of life for the poor. People in poverty are often in survival mode, where the future holds no promise, and support systems taken for granted in middle class and wealth do not exist." Bridges Out of Poverty will help you and your program partner with students living in poverty to create opportunities for success and strengthen student persistence. It gives the strategies to begin working on "front-line" staff skills, from support staff to administrators, and to develop new methods to improve relationships with students and improve outcomes.
