| Description This alternative delivery training is appropriate for all teachers, but especially for those teaching ESOL and EL/Civics. All materials are provided by the Northeast ABLE Resource Center. Destination America is composed of the PBS television series by David Grubin on DVD and book by Chuck Wills. It "focuses on the world immigrants left behind, the roots that defined them, and the frustrations, hardships, discontents and ambitions that made and continues to make America their destination." The DVD runs approximately 3 hours and 40 minutes and is divided into four parts: 1) The Golden Door, 2) The Art of Departure, 3) The Earth is the Lord's and 4) Breaking Free: A Woman's Journey. The book, illustrated with over 500 photos and works of art, highlights the freedoms which compelled people to come to America: freedom to worship, freedom from oppression, freedom from want, freedom from fear, and freedom to create. The activity involves the following steps: 1) View the Destination America video and read through the book. You may want to select portions that contain information on the immigrant groups represented in your community or class. 2) Write your reaction to the video and accompanying book. How does the information relate to your professional experience? |
