A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier by Ishmael Beah
It is unthinkable that young children are routinely kidnapped or recruited to become soldiers in on-going wars around the world. Ishmael Beah's first person account of this trauma at the young age of 12 in Sierra Leone details his life in the army from the first day he was dragged into service until he was suddenly removed by UNICEF and rehabilitated.

The activity involves the following steps:

1) Read A Long Way Gone by Ismael Beah. The Northeast ABLE Resource Center will send you the book.
2) You may want to access and view background information on child soldiers and interviews with the author on four websites provided by the resource center.
3) After reading the book, write a reaction paper focusing on how the materials relate to your teaching experience.
4) Return the book with your reaction paper and a signed stipend request/evaluation form ($30) and a certificate of completion will be sent to you.
