| Description This alternative delivery professional development opportunity is for all ESOL teachers and directors. God Grew Tired of Us A Memoir Book and DVD John Bul Dau, one of the Lost Boys of Sudan, describes in heartbreaking detail how, at age 13, he along with thousands of other Dinka boys fled the civil war in southern Sudan in 1987. After walking hundreds of miles and surviving desert heat, crocodile infested waters, and murderous militias, John and his new family of brothers found shelter in refugee camps in Ethiopia and later in Kenya. Fourteen years later, having grown up using survival skills learned on the run and in refugee camps, John left the Kenyan Kakuma refugee camp to settle in Syracuse, New York, under the auspices of Church World Services and the United States government. The activity involves the following steps: 1) Read the memoir by John Bul Dau and view the DVD. Both are provided by the Northeast ABLE Resource Center. 2) After reading the book and viewing the DVD, write a reaction paper focusing on how the book and video relate to your teaching. 3) Return the book with your reaction paper and a signed stipend request/evaluation form ($30) and a certificate of completion will be sent to you. |
