Determine the reading purpose Adults want to function independently, especially when doing their grocery shopping.
Select reading strategies appropriate to the purpose Students are learning the alphabet and sounds of the letters by developing a list of grocery words.
Monitor comprehension and adjust reading strategies When students actually buy the groceries from their list, they are verifying their word knowledge.
Analyze information and reflect on its underlying meaning Students must draw conclusions about environmental print when they match labels and sentences.
Integrate it with prior knowledge to address reading purpose As their word bank grows, students use these grocery word lists to make family shopping lists for each week.

Being able to write a grocery list and then shop for those items is an imminent goal for struggling readers.

By using grocery list words as teaching materials, students have real-life words that can be used immediately to their benefit.

Students will continue to build their knowledge base by adding new words to their grocery list word bank and extend their word lists into other topics of interest.
