Component of Performance How activity addresses component
Determine the reading purpose Safety is of utmost importance when using over-the-counter medications.
Select reading strategies appropriate to the purpose Students are sorting medications by likekinds. They compare and contrast using a Venn Diagram, finding the differences and commonalities of OTC and Rx medications.
Monitor comprehension and adjust reading strategies Use of medical terminology will need to evaluated by teachers and students and a vocabulary study will need to held before continuing with activities.
Analyze information and reflect on its underlying meaning They will have to pay close attention to labels and directions and determine what to keep in their medicine cabinets.
Integrate it with prior knowledge to address reading purpose After determining possible side effects, students will decide if medications are appropriate for their use in order to be safe.

The teacher is very explicit about strategy instruction as they work through these activities. Students may be unfamiliar with using graphic organizers as a tool.

Contextual
By using actual labels and directions, students are able to read and understand medications that they use in their everyday lives.

Building Expertise
The Venn Diagram is an excellent example of how to scaffold student learning.
