Determine the purpose for communicating Students need to set goals to guide their educational journey. These goals will be written down and placed in the student's portfolio.
Organize and present information to serve the purpose, context, and audience Students write SMART* goals and prioritize them using postit notes, charts, drawings, and brainstorming. * Specific, Measurable, Action-oriented, Realistic, and Time-framed
Pay attention to conventions of English language usage, including grammar, spelling, and sentence structure, to minimize barriers to readers' comprehension Based on information from TABE and student writing samples, student goals will address areas that need to be improved. Teacher proofs the goals for grammar, punctuation, etc. and uses information for mini lessons.
Seek feedback and revise to enhance the effectiveness of the communication Working in pairs during the goal setting process, students will use each other and the teacher to get feedback about revising and editing the drafts of their goals. They can use the computer to make changes to their drafts.

Goal setting is an important part of orientation and goals are a tool students can use to track their progress.

Contextual
Goals are based on what students identify as important in their lives and can be used both inside and outside of the classroom.

Building Expertise
Students start with past successes to plan future successes. Students refine their goals. Students get experience with brainstorming, organization, working collaboratively, writing, revising, and editing.
