Standard: Read With Understanding
Component of Performance How activity addresses component
Determine the reading purpose Having the students think about when they have read to find out about a topic of interest and specifically how the text was organized will help them build their understanding of reading for information.
Select reading strategies appropriate to the purpose Student become more familiar with the before, during, and after phases of reading and are given specific strategies for each.
Monitor comprehension and adjust reading strategies Backing up and rereading are suggested when lack of understanding happens during the reading process.
Analyze information and reflect on its underlying meaning After reading, students are given several techniques to gain meaning from the text. They draw conclusions from the text by summarizing the information.
Integrate it with prior knowledge to address reading purpose Being aware of expository text structures when reading for information will help students to better understand or learn that particular topic.

This lesson specifically teaches several reading strategies that students can use when reading for information.

Contextual
Application of skills will be strengthened as students transfer their learning from this lesson to text where gaining information is necessary for their understanding.

Building Expertise
Students become aware of the reading process, use their previous experiences, and construct new understanding of best ways for them to take out information from the text.
