Standard: Convey Ideas in Writing
Component of Performance How activity addresses component
Determine the purpose for communicating Students will articulate a medical concern to fit the model of a letter asking for advice.
Organize and present information to serve the purpose, context, and audience Prior to writing their own letters, students will generate ideas as a class. Also, students will work in pairs before responding to their fellow student's writing.
Pay attention to conventions of English language usage, including grammar, spelling, and sentence structure, to minimize barriers to readers' comprehension Students will use correct punctuation and try to avoid grammatical errors to ensure the best understanding.
Seek feedback and revise to enhance the effectiveness of the communication Students will receive feedback from their fellow students in response to their initial letter. Students should proofread their letters, checking for appropriate verb tenses, grammatical errors, and clarity before turning in their work.

Purposeful, Transparent, Building Expertise

This activity provides a framework where group discussion can identify and find solutions to individual health issues.

Building Expertise
Students are building their understanding of medical conditions by finding solutions to existing problems and giving advice to benefit others.
