Component of Performance How activity addresses component
Determine the purpose for communicating Using detail enhances written communication and relates specific information to the reader. Students use detail to clarify and illustrate information.
Organize and present information to serve the purpose, context, and audience Paragraph will be developed with a topic sentence, followed by descriptive sentences that relate to the topic. Details included will be generated from a brainstormed list of details.
Pay attention to conventions of English language usage, including grammar, spelling, and sentence structure, to minimize barriers to readers' comprehension Writing will include a variety of sentences using adjectives to describe the picture. Sentences will use correct capitalization, punctuation, and spelling.
Seek feedback and revise to enhance the effectiveness of the communication When writing is complete, students will conference with a partner to edit papers. A final draft will be written with revisions and turned in to the teacher.

This activity encourages students to pay attention to details. In their everyday lives details can determine outcomes in important situations, clarify information, or explain situations.

Contextual
Writing is part of the GED test as well as being part of everyday life. Focusing on detail allows students to write with a specific purpose.

Building Expertise
The writing assignment allows students to gain experience using a graphic organizer to develop a well written paragraph. The writing process becomes automatic as students use the steps to write one paragraph or multiple paragraphs.
