Purposeful, Transparent, Contextual, Building Expertise
Purposeful and Transparent
Students knew that fiction prose was included on the GED test and that they need practice with this genre.

Contextual
Since many of them enjoyed scary movies, they were open to reading something along the same line. They realized that Stephen King movies began in the written form.

Building Expertise
This activity built up the students' selfconfidence in reading this type of material. The discussions helped to validate their opinions and encouraged them to express themselves. They said that they would be open to reading more of Poe's works. Everyone who participated showed comprehension of the story.
