Teaching Ideas:
In a multi-level class, teachers will want to pair this book with easy reading My Brothers' Flying Machine by Jane Yolen. Literature Circle discussions for the various divisions of the text (Parts 1, 2, 3, 4) would be useful in clarifying content and raising questions and isssues as well as discussing interesting word or phrases from the book. Since the book offers many moments of decision and choice that represent values of the times, Agree?Disagree? Why? strategy allows readers to explore the issues e.g. Women should be responsible for the care of their brothers. Discussion Webs would support considering these issues from multiple viewpoints. Readers might assume the identity of one of the Wright siblings and write Unsent Letters or journal entries.
