Summary:
The author presents the history of child labor in America in four chapters, written with two easy-to-read paragraphs per page , and illustrated with archival black-and-white photogaphs. What distinguishes this book for use in a classroom is the back matter : ideas for research about child labor, ideas for teachers, bibliography, web sites, glossary, index, and a timeline.

Teaching Ideas:
A text set on child labor that includes Russell Freedman's Kids At Work, Milton Meltzer's Cheap Raw Material, and Katherine Paterson's fictional Lyddie, benefits from this easy-to-read book. Use the teaching ideas suggested in the book. Learners' can research the history of child labor in their state. Another classroom activity is to trace the geography and economic journery of an item of clothing a student is wearing: Where was it manufactured? Where did the raw materials come from? Who made it? Then students might want to debate the pros and cons of boycotting items produced by child labor.
