Summary:
A mother answers her son's question, "Who came down that road, Mama?" by going back through time to the creation of the world.

Teaching Ideas:
Students could make a timeline, developing and redeveloping a scale to represent time, using markers such as Civil War, Native American life, mastodons, and inland sea to research dates. Students may enjoy discussing how we know that these events occurred. The transition from personal history to political history to history of species to geological history suggests that family history is the starting point for historical understanding. Students may want to try to research their "history" in this pattern. The illustrations make excellent writing prompts.
