Summary:
A detailed biography of Marian Anderson, an exceedingly talented woman who overcame some racial barriers and tolerated others in order to do what she loved best, recounts how she became involved in the Civil Rights Movement. In addition to wonderful archival photographs, the author enables readers to examine his research and explore further with chapter notes, discography, bibliography, picture credits, and a comprehensive index.

Teaching Ideas:
This book provides information about Marian Anderson's early life that supplements other books in a small text set that includes Miss Ida's Porch, Keep on Singing, and When Marian Sang. In order to understand what Anderson (and many other performers) endured, readers could keep a list of the racial barriers she encountered and what she did about them. Creating a timeline helps expand Anderson's accomplishments beyond her famous Lincoln Memorial performance. Freedman's references to quoted material make this a good model for teaching annotation of resources. Because Anderson reevaluates her progress toward her goals, readers can document the occasions on which she changes her goals and why. Local libraries may have recordings of Anderson that would support the text.
