When a farmer dies, his wife deals with her grief by ignoring (hating) his favorite cat, until she finally realizes that they could find companionship with each other.

Teaching Ideas:
This might make a good pair with Rylant's Missing May, since in both of them people are dealing with grief and loss, or with one of the stories in Every Living Thing, in which the animals help people be more compassionate.
