Summary:
An historical look at the influence cotton has had on the economy and people of the United States. The author traces the cotton industry from colonial times through the Civil War and the Great Migration, from the Southern plantations to the mill towns like Lowell, MA. The book includes suggestions for further reading, a bibliography, and an index.

Teaching Ideas:
This text could be used in a variety of text sets but would be especially good paired with Lyddie The Bobbin Girl, and Kids at Work. This book would also be a good companion to books on related topics - Lewis Hines' book about child labor or Joan Dash's We Shall Not Be Moved. Chapters on specific topics could be excerpted. Students will want to check out the web sites in the book for Lowell National Historical Park and The Center for Lowell History. Since quotes from oral histories introduce the chapters, readers might want to investigate some slave histories. Since the author grew up in Lowell, MA, students might discuss/write how the author's birthplace influenced her writing. Students could see what other historical events were happening at the times mentioned in the book. Students could research the role cotton plays in other nation's economies. Using cattle as a theme similar to the author's use of cotton, students could construct an outline of the industry as a part of American history.
