Teaching Ideas:
What fun to trace Rylant's trip west on a map. What states did she cross? Does she include all the states that she traveled through? Approximately how many miles did she travel? Students could write or discuss car trips they have made. My Travels with Charlie might be something to excerpt to use with this book. Also, Charles Karakul's TV program "Travels Across America" would be good to excerpt from PBS online archives.
