Summary: |
Based on a true 19th-century adventure, the book tells the story of the survivor of shipboard cruelty on a whaling ship and his escape through the Siberian wilderness. The book contains maps and an afterword about the source of the story. |
Teaching Ideas: |
After a discussion about whaling based on information from the books, a class might ask why whales are no longer hunted (other sources of oil and bone) and expand the topic to explore issues of endangered species. The suspenseful narrative lends itself to predictive strategies such as DR-TA. This book makes an interesting comparison/contrast with a much more pleasant sea voyage in Bluewater Journal.
