Summary:
Ostensibly writing about the real "Christmas truce" of Dec. 25, 1914, the author provides excellent historical material about the origins and maneuvers of this period of World War I. Photographs give immediacy to the text and back pages and maps provide material for further study. Timeline, notes, and sources are provided for further study.

Teaching Ideas:
Readers might compare World War I fighting strategies with earlier wars and then with present-day war, perhaps using a three-way Venn diagram. A discussion of trench warfare might make the conditions of the truce more understandable. Could such a truce take place today? Why or why not? Pair with the Christmas Truce lesson plan.
