Teaching Ideas:
This well-written book belongs in a small but intriguing text set on arctic explorers with Buried in Ice, Over the Top of the World. With the help of the web sites below students could develop a matrix to compare expeditions, (including Amundsen who actually reached the South Pole)--goals, geographic location, date, problems, nationality etc. This would be a terrific book for thinking about goals and success--Shackleton never quite achieved his goals but he was a grand success. The photographs also make historical issues very accessible, including what is occasionally a text-heavy presentation. The photos can be used as models for students interested in photography, as ways of understanding history, and for writing. Shackleton's life raises the question for discussion or writing of why explorers endure such hardships and engage in such risk-taking activities. For more information look at these web sites: ; .
