Summary: |
In 1159, Benjamin Tudela, a Jew, left Tudela, Spain, set off to see Jerusalem and as many places mentioned in the Bible as possible. Fourteen years later he returned to tell of his travels. The author extensively researched the period to fill in details of the real story. |
Teaching Ideas: |
These travel adventures from 1159-1173 suggest a variety of then/now activities. Since this is a book of travels, readers may want to keep track of the different modes of transport Benjamin used. How would a present-day traveler make this trip and how long would it take? Readers could also compare a current map with the one in the book to see the different political boundries. Students familiar with the Biblical stories might want to compare and contrast the time, place, and events of parallel episodes using Venn diagrams. |
